The P2444 code means the PCM has detected that the secondary air injection pump for Bank 1 is running when it should be off. The air pump is only supposed to run for a short period (typically 30–90 seconds) during cold starts to help the catalytic converter warm up. If it continues running after the engine is warm, this code is set.

A pump that is stuck on can cause several issues. The continuous flow of air into the exhaust manifold creates a lean condition that the oxygen sensors detect. The PCM may try to compensate by adding more fuel, reducing fuel economy. You will also hear the air pump running continuously — it makes a noticeable whirring or rushing sound that normally stops within a minute or two of starting.

The most common cause is a stuck relay, which is usually an inexpensive and easy fix. Check the air pump relay first — you can often swap it with an identical relay from another circuit to test. If the relay is fine, inspect the wiring for shorts to power. The pump itself running continuously will eventually burn out, so addressing this promptly can save you from needing a pump replacement as well.
