Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction

The P0410 code indicates a malfunction in the Secondary Air Injection (SAI) system. This system pumps fresh outside air into the exhaust stream during cold engine starts to help the catalytic converter heat up faster and burn off the rich exhaust emissions produced during warm-up. When the ECM detects the system isn't functioning as expected, it sets this code.
This code is especially common on GM, BMW, and Volkswagen vehicles. In about 90% of cases, the root cause is failed one-way check valves that allow moisture from the exhaust to flow back into the air pump, eventually destroying it. You may hear an unusual whining or grinding noise from the engine bay during cold starts if the pump is failing, or complete silence if it has already failed. The vehicle will otherwise drive normally, but will fail an emissions test.
The most reliable fix is to replace both the check valves and the air pump, as a failed check valve will quickly destroy a new pump if not addressed simultaneously. On some vehicles, the air pump is easily accessible, while on others (particularly some BMW models) it can be buried and labor-intensive to reach. Professional repair costs typically range from $350 to $900, with the pump itself costing $100–$250 for most vehicles.
Severity
Symptoms
- •Check Engine Light is on
- •Unusual whining or buzzing noise from the engine bay on cold start
- •Rough idle during engine warm-up
- •Slight sulfur or exhaust smell during cold starts
- •Failed emissions inspection
- •Engine may take longer to warm up properly
Likely Causes
The electric air pump motor has burned out, or its bearings have seized. Moisture and debris entering through failed check valves accelerate pump failure.
The check valves that prevent exhaust gases and moisture from flowing back into the air pump have deteriorated, allowing water damage to the pump internals.
The fuse or relay that powers the secondary air injection pump has failed, preventing the pump from operating when commanded.
Carbon deposits in the air injection passages or at the exhaust manifold ports restrict airflow, reducing system effectiveness.
The solenoid that directs airflow or the electrical wiring to the pump has failed, preventing proper system operation.
