The P2442 code is the Bank 2 equivalent of P2440, meaning the secondary air injection system switching valve for Bank 2 (the side of the engine that does not contain cylinder 1) is stuck in the open position. This valve should only open during cold starts, but it is remaining open at all times.

Symptoms are similar to P2440 — you may hear a hissing noise, experience a rough idle, and the Bank 2 oxygen sensors may read lean because extra air is being pushed into the exhaust when it should not be. This can cause the PCM to adjust fuel delivery incorrectly, potentially affecting engine performance and fuel economy.

On V-type engines (V6, V8), Bank 2 is typically the opposite side from Bank 1, and on many vehicles the Bank 2 components are harder to access. This often makes the repair more labor-intensive and expensive compared to Bank 1. The parts cost is similar to Bank 1 repairs. If you are getting both P2440 and P2442, it may be more cost-effective to replace both switching valves at the same time to save on labor. This is a common issue on Toyota Tundra, Sequoia, and Lexus models.

Severity

Moderate — Address SoonThis Week

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light is on
  • Hissing or whistling noise from engine area
  • Rough idle especially during warm-up
  • Lean running condition detected by Bank 2 oxygen sensors
  • Failed emissions test
  • Potential exhaust odor in engine compartment

Likely Causes

Stuck-open air switching valve Bank 240%

The Bank 2 switching valve has mechanically failed open due to carbon buildup, corrosion, or internal spring failure.

Faulty air switching valve solenoid25%

The solenoid for the Bank 2 valve is stuck energized or has an internal failure keeping the valve open.

Carbon buildup preventing valve closure20%

Exhaust carbon deposits have built up on the valve seat, preventing the switching valve from closing completely.

Vacuum line issue10%

A cracked or disconnected vacuum line keeps the Bank 2 valve actuated open.

Short circuit in solenoid wiring5%

A wiring short keeps the solenoid energized, holding the valve open continuously.
