Code P0218 means the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected that the transmission fluid temperature has exceeded the maximum safe operating threshold, which is typically around 260–290°F depending on the manufacturer. Transmission fluid normally operates between 175–225°F, so this code indicates a serious overheating event that can cause rapid internal damage.

Transmission overheating is one of the leading causes of premature transmission failure. Every 20°F above the normal operating range roughly halves the remaining life of the transmission fluid, and extreme heat destroys the friction material on clutch packs and bands. If you see this code, you should pull over safely as soon as possible and let the transmission cool down. Check for obvious issues like low fluid level (check while the engine is running and warm, on level ground) or fluid that appears dark brown or smells burnt.

The cost to fix this code varies enormously depending on the root cause. A simple fluid top-off or sensor replacement might cost under $200, while a transmission cooler line repair typically runs $150–$400. However, if the overheating has caused internal transmission damage, you could be looking at a transmission rebuild ($1,500–$3,500) or replacement. Stop driving immediately if you notice slipping, harsh shifts, or a burning smell — continued driving with an overheating transmission can turn a minor repair into a major one very quickly.

Symptoms

  • Check Engine light or transmission warning light on
  • Transmission slipping between gears
  • Vehicle enters limp mode with limited power
  • Harsh or delayed gear shifts
  • Burning smell from under the vehicle
  • Transmission fluid temperature gauge reading high

Likely Causes

Low or degraded transmission fluid35%

Low fluid level from a leak or severely degraded fluid that has lost its cooling and lubricating properties causes the transmission to overheat from increased friction.

Transmission cooler or cooler line failure25%

A clogged, restricted, or leaking transmission cooler (or cooler lines) prevents the fluid from dissipating heat properly, leading to overheating.

Faulty transmission fluid temperature sensor20%

The temperature sensor inside the transmission may be sending inaccurate readings to the ECM, falsely reporting an over-temperature condition.

Internal transmission damage15%

Worn clutch packs, bands, or bearings inside the transmission create excessive friction and heat, causing the fluid temperature to climb beyond safe limits.

Towing or heavy load beyond capacity5%

Towing loads exceeding the vehicle's rated capacity or sustained heavy use in hot weather can push transmission temperatures beyond design limits.
