The P0711 code is set when the transmission fluid temperature sensor is producing readings that fall outside the expected range or are not changing at the expected rate. Unlike P0710, which indicates a circuit-level fault, P0711 specifically means the sensor is communicating but its readings don't match what the PCM expects based on driving conditions. For example, the fluid temperature might not rise as the vehicle is driven, or it might read an implausible temperature at startup.
This code affects transmission shift quality because the PCM relies on fluid temperature to adjust shift points, line pressure, and torque converter clutch engagement. Cold fluid requires different shift strategies than hot fluid, so inaccurate readings lead to harsh shifts, slipping, or poor fuel economy. The transmission may also enter limp mode if the PCM determines the temperature data is unreliable.
Before replacing the sensor, start by checking your transmission fluid level and condition. Low fluid or fluid that is dark, burnt-smelling, or contaminated with debris is often the underlying cause. A fluid and filter change may resolve the issue. If the fluid is in good condition, inspect the sensor wiring for damage and then replace the TFT sensor itself. This is usually an affordable repair with parts costing under $100.
Severity
Symptoms
- •Harsh or delayed gear shifts
- •Transmission slipping between gears
- •Decreased fuel efficiency
- •Torque converter clutch not engaging properly
- •Check engine light illuminated
- •Transmission may enter limp mode
Likely Causes
The sensor is producing a signal but it's not changing appropriately as the fluid heats up or cools down — indicating the thermistor is drifting or sluggish in its response.
Low fluid volume or burnt, degraded fluid can cause the sensor to read temperatures outside the expected range, especially if the sensor isn't fully submerged in fluid.
High-resistance connections, chafed wires near heat sources, or loose connector pins can alter the voltage signal enough to push readings outside the normal performance window.
The control module may have an incorrect temperature profile or internal fault that causes it to flag valid sensor readings as out of range.
