The P0710 code indicates a general malfunction in the transmission fluid temperature sensor circuit. This sensor monitors the temperature of the automatic transmission fluid (ATF), which is critical information the PCM uses to control shift timing, torque converter lockup, and line pressure. When the PCM can't read the fluid temperature, it can't properly manage transmission operation.
Without accurate temperature data, the transmission may shift too harshly, shift at incorrect times, or fail to engage the torque converter clutch when it should. In many vehicles, the PCM will activate limp mode as a protective measure, locking the transmission in a single gear. You may also notice a transmission temperature warning light on the dashboard if your vehicle is equipped with one.
The TFT sensor is often an inexpensive part ($15–$80) and on many vehicles is accessible on the outside of the transmission case or within the transmission oil pan. Before replacing the sensor, check for damaged wiring and ensure the transmission fluid is at the proper level and in good condition. Contaminated or burnt fluid should be changed along with the filter. This is a moderately easy DIY repair on vehicles where the sensor is externally mounted, but more involved if it's located inside the transmission pan.
Severity
Symptoms
- •Transmission shifts harshly or at unusual times
- •Transmission overheating warning light illuminated
- •Reduced fuel economy
- •Transmission enters limp mode
- •Check engine light illuminated
- •Burning smell from under the vehicle
Likely Causes
The thermistor inside the TFT sensor can fail, producing no signal or an inaccurate resistance reading that doesn't correspond to actual fluid temperature.
The sensor wiring runs near the hot transmission case and is exposed to road debris, making it susceptible to heat damage, corrosion, and chafing that disrupts the circuit.
Old, degraded, or low transmission fluid can cause abnormal temperature readings and may also damage the sensor over time, especially if the fluid contains metallic debris.
The control module itself may have an internal fault in the circuit that reads the temperature sensor, causing it to misinterpret otherwise valid sensor data.
