The P2111 code is a critical safety alert indicating that the electronic throttle is stuck in an open position. This means the throttle plate — which controls how much air enters the engine — is not closing when it should, potentially causing the engine to race at high RPMs without driver input. This is one of the most dangerous throttle-related codes.

If your engine is revving on its own or the vehicle is surging forward without you pressing the gas pedal, pull over immediately and turn off the engine. Do not attempt to drive the vehicle. A stuck-open throttle is a serious safety hazard that can cause uncontrolled acceleration. Shift to neutral if needed to disengage the drivetrain, apply the brakes firmly, and stop the vehicle as soon as safely possible.

In some cases, severe carbon buildup is the culprit and a thorough throttle body cleaning resolves the issue. However, if the throttle motor or internal mechanism has failed, the entire throttle body assembly must be replaced. After any repair, a throttle body relearn procedure must be performed. Given the safety implications, have this diagnosed and repaired by a professional unless you are experienced with electronic throttle systems.

Severity

Critical — Do Not DriveImmediately

Symptoms

  • Engine races or revs high without pressing the gas pedal
  • Vehicle surges forward unexpectedly
  • Very high idle speed
  • Check engine light on
  • Vehicle may be dangerous to drive due to uncontrolled acceleration

Likely Causes

Carbon buildup holding throttle plate open30%

Severe carbon deposits on the throttle plate and bore can physically prevent the throttle from closing completely, holding it in a partially or fully open position regardless of PCM commands.

Failed throttle body motor unable to close the plate30%

The electric motor inside the throttle body that moves the throttle plate can fail in a way that leaves the plate stuck in an open position — worn gears, stripped drive mechanisms, or burned motor coils.

Throttle return spring failure20%

Electronic throttle bodies contain a return spring that defaults the throttle to a slightly open position. If the motor fails, the spring should close the throttle — but if the spring also fails or is obstructed, the plate may remain open.

Faulty TPS reporting stuck-open condition20%

The throttle position sensor may be reporting that the throttle is stuck open when it's actually functioning normally. Internal sensor failure can cause a false alarm, but this must be verified before assuming the code is incorrect.
