The P2110 code indicates the PCM has detected a major failure in the throttle actuator control system and has responded by limiting maximum engine RPM. This is a safety measure — rather than allowing the engine to rev freely when the throttle system isn't functioning correctly, the PCM caps the RPM to prevent engine damage and maintain a degree of vehicle control.

With this code active, your vehicle will feel significantly underpowered. The engine will accelerate up to the imposed RPM limit and then refuse to go higher, regardless of how hard you press the gas pedal. This makes highway driving difficult or impossible and limits your ability to merge with traffic safely.

Like other force codes (P2104, P2105, P2106), P2110 is a symptom rather than the root cause. There will be additional trouble codes stored in the PCM that identify the actual failed component. Have the vehicle professionally scanned to identify all codes, then repair the underlying issue. After repairs, all codes must be cleared and a throttle body relearn procedure performed to restore normal operation.

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Engine RPM limited and won't rev above a certain point
  • Significant loss of acceleration and power
  • Vehicle struggles to maintain highway speeds
  • Engine may feel like it hits a wall when accelerating

Likely Causes

Underlying throttle system fault triggering RPM limiting as safety response40%

P2110 is another protective 'force code' set by the PCM when a throttle-related malfunction is detected. The PCM limits maximum RPM to prevent engine damage or unsafe conditions while the root cause remains unrepaired.

Faulty electronic throttle body or TPS25%

A throttle body with intermittent faults or a throttle position sensor providing unreliable readings can cause the PCM to limit RPM to maintain safe and predictable engine behavior.

APP sensor malfunction20%

When the accelerator pedal position sensor sends erratic or out-of-range signals, the PCM limits engine RPM because it cannot reliably determine how much throttle the driver is requesting.

Throttle actuator motor performance issue15%

A throttle motor that responds too slowly, overshoots its target, or operates erratically causes the PCM to lose confidence in the throttle system and impose an RPM limit as protection.
