Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Stuck On

P0742 indicates the torque converter clutch is stuck in the engaged (on) position. This is a more serious condition than the clutch being stuck off (P0741) because a converter that stays locked at low speeds acts like driving a manual transmission without pressing the clutch — the engine will stall or buck severely when you slow down or come to a stop.
This code creates a noticeable and potentially dangerous driving condition. The vehicle may stall at stop signs or traffic lights, buck and surge in stop-and-go traffic, and feel extremely rough at low speeds. If you experience stalling when stopping, this code needs immediate attention as it affects your ability to safely drive in traffic.
The most common cause is a TCC solenoid that is stuck in the on position, either mechanically or due to a wiring short. Have this diagnosed promptly — driving with a locked torque converter puts extreme stress on the transmission and engine, and stalling in traffic is a safety hazard. A solenoid replacement or wiring repair may resolve the issue, but if the torque converter itself is mechanically stuck, converter replacement will be necessary.

Symptoms
- •Engine stalls when slowing down or coming to a stop
- •Vehicle bucks or surges at low speeds
- •Rough idle or engine struggles to stay running
- •Check Engine light illuminated
- •Vehicle feels like it's being driven in too high a gear at low speeds
Likely Causes
The torque converter clutch solenoid is mechanically or electrically stuck in the engaged position, keeping the converter locked up at all times including at low speeds and stops.
A short to power in the TCC solenoid wiring can keep the solenoid continuously energized, causing constant lockup regardless of PCM commands.
A stuck valve in the valve body can maintain hydraulic pressure to the TCC apply circuit even when the solenoid is commanded off.
Mechanical binding inside the torque converter can prevent the clutch from releasing, keeping it locked even when disengagement is commanded.
A malfunctioning control module may be incorrectly commanding the TCC solenoid to remain engaged.
