The P0717 code is a serious transmission fault indicating that the TCM is receiving absolutely no signal from the input/turbine speed sensor. This sensor is essential for calculating gear ratios and controlling shift points — without it, the transmission cannot shift properly and will almost certainly enter limp mode, restricting you to one or two gears.

This is a more severe condition than P0716 (range/performance) because there is a complete loss of signal rather than an erratic one. The transmission may refuse to shift at all, shift extremely harshly, or lock into a single gear. You may also experience stalling when the vehicle comes to a stop because the torque converter clutch can't be properly controlled. The speedometer may also be affected on some vehicles.

Do not continue driving normally with this code. While limp mode will allow you to get home or to a shop at low speeds, extended driving without a proper input speed signal can cause additional transmission damage. Diagnosis should start with checking the sensor connector — it may simply be unplugged. Inspect the wiring for breaks or damage from fluid leaks. If the external components check out, the sensor likely needs replacement. In rare cases where a new sensor doesn't resolve the issue, the internal reluctor ring may be damaged, which requires transmission removal.

Severity

High — Immediate AttentionWithin 24 Hours

Symptoms

  • Transmission won't shift out of first or second gear
  • Vehicle enters limp mode immediately
  • Severe harsh shifting or no shifting at all
  • Speedometer may read zero while driving
  • Engine stalls when coming to a stop
  • Check engine light illuminated

Likely Causes

Failed input/turbine speed sensor40%

The sensor has completely failed and is producing no signal whatsoever. This is a complete loss of the input speed signal that the TCM requires for all shift calculations.

Broken or disconnected wiring25%

An open circuit caused by a broken wire, disconnected connector, or severed harness completely prevents the sensor signal from reaching the TCM.

Transmission fluid leak damaging sensor or wiring20%

A transmission fluid leak can coat and damage the sensor wiring and connectors over time. The leaking ATF degrades wire insulation and corrodes connector pins until the circuit fails.

Damaged reluctor ring inside transmission15%

If the toothed reluctor ring that the sensor reads has been damaged or has come loose from the input shaft, the sensor won't be able to generate a signal even though the sensor itself works.
