The P0716 code indicates that the input/turbine speed sensor is sending readings to the TCM that fall outside the expected performance range. This sensor monitors the rotational speed of the transmission's input shaft (turbine), which the TCM uses along with the output speed sensor to calculate gear ratios, control shift timing, and manage torque converter lockup. When the signal is erratic, the TCM can't make accurate shifting decisions.

You'll likely notice harsh or unpredictable shifts, transmission slipping during acceleration, and possibly speedometer inaccuracies. The vehicle may also stall when coming to a stop if the torque converter clutch doesn't disengage properly. In severe cases, the transmission may enter limp mode to protect itself from damage caused by improper shifting.

A common and often overlooked cause is metallic debris accumulating on the sensor's magnetic tip. Start by checking the transmission fluid — if it's dark, burnt-smelling, or contains visible metallic particles, a fluid and filter change may help. If the sensor is externally mounted (varies by vehicle), you can remove it and clean the tip. Otherwise, inspect wiring and connectors before replacing the sensor. The sensor itself is typically $20–$80, making this a relatively affordable repair if you catch it early.

Symptoms

  • Erratic or harsh shifting between gears
  • Transmission slipping during acceleration
  • Speedometer reading incorrectly
  • Torque converter lockup problems
  • Check engine light illuminated
  • Vehicle may stall when coming to a stop

Likely Causes

Failing input/turbine speed sensor35%

The magnetic pickup sensor is producing a signal, but it's erratic or outside the expected range — often due to a weakening magnetic element or damaged reluctor ring teeth inside the transmission.

Metallic debris on the sensor tip25%

The input speed sensor has a magnetic tip that attracts metal particles from normal transmission wear. Excessive buildup of metallic debris interferes with the sensor's ability to read the reluctor ring accurately.

Damaged or corroded wiring/connectors25%

The sensor wiring runs along the transmission case and is subjected to heat and vibration. Corroded connectors or chafed wiring can cause intermittent signal degradation.

Low or contaminated transmission fluid15%

Burnt or debris-laden fluid can affect the sensor's operation, and low fluid levels may cause the turbine to spin erratically, producing abnormal speed readings.
