The P0533 code indicates the A/C refrigerant pressure sensor is sending a signal to the PCM that exceeds the expected maximum voltage threshold. This high reading tells the PCM that refrigerant pressure is dangerously high, causing it to shut down the compressor as a protective measure. The result is an AC system that doesn't cool or that cycles off almost immediately after engaging.
You may notice the AC blowing warm air, or the compressor engaging briefly before shutting off. In some vehicles, the engine cooling fans may run at high speed constantly because the PCM thinks the AC system needs extra cooling. The vehicle drives normally otherwise — this is strictly a comfort issue.
The first thing to check is whether the AC system has been recently serviced or recharged, as overcharging is a common cause. A technician can measure actual high-side and low-side pressures with manifold gauges to determine if the charge is correct. If pressures are normal, check the condenser for blocked airflow — debris, bugs, or a bent fin can reduce cooling capacity. Also verify the cooling fans operate when the AC is on. If the system pressures and airflow are fine, the sensor or its wiring is the likely cause. As with all AC work, refrigerant handling should be done by a certified professional to comply with environmental regulations and ensure proper system operation.

Symptoms
- •Air conditioning may not engage or cycles off quickly
- •AC may blow warm air
- •Engine cooling fans may run constantly at high speed
- •AC compressor clutch disengages prematurely
- •Vehicle otherwise runs and drives normally
Likely Causes
Too much refrigerant in the system creates genuinely high pressures that exceed the sensor's expected range, causing a high-input reading.
The sensor has failed internally, producing maximum voltage output or an open circuit that the PCM reads as a high-pressure condition.
A blocked condenser or non-functioning cooling fan prevents proper heat dissipation, causing high-side pressure to climb above normal range.
A broken signal wire or disconnected connector causes the PCM to read pull-up voltage, interpreted as a high-input condition.
A restricted expansion device prevents proper refrigerant flow, causing high-side pressure to build excessively.
