The P0464 code means the PCM has detected an intermittent signal from the fuel level sensor — the reading is jumping around in a way that doesn't correspond to normal fuel consumption or refueling. You'll likely notice your fuel gauge bouncing between different readings, sometimes dramatically, or flickering between full and empty.

Intermittent electrical problems are often the most frustrating to diagnose because the fault comes and goes. The most common cause is a worn fuel level sending unit with dead spots on its resistor strip — as the float moves across these worn areas, the resistance (and therefore the gauge reading) jumps erratically. Wiggling the connector at the fuel pump module while monitoring the fuel level signal with a scan tool can help determine if the issue is in the connection versus the sender itself.

Since the signal is intermittent rather than completely failed, your fuel gauge may work correctly some of the time, which can make it tempting to ignore. However, an unreliable fuel gauge is a genuine inconvenience and safety concern. Until repaired, track your mileage manually and refuel based on your odometer reading rather than trusting the gauge.

Severity

Moderate — Address SoonThis Month

Symptoms

  • Fuel gauge jumps erratically between readings
  • Fuel gauge temporarily reads full then drops to empty or vice versa
  • Low fuel light flickers on and off
  • Distance-to-empty reading fluctuates wildly
  • Check Engine light is on

Likely Causes

Worn fuel level sending unit with intermittent contact35%

The resistor strip inside the sending unit develops worn spots or dead zones, causing the signal to jump as the float moves across these areas.

Loose or intermittent wiring connection30%

A connector that's not fully seated or a wire with damaged insulation can make and lose contact intermittently, especially over bumps.

Corroded connector pins20%

Partially corroded connector pins at the fuel pump module create intermittent electrical contact, causing the signal to fluctuate.

Fuel sloshing causing float issues10%

A damaged or bent float arm combined with fuel sloshing during turns and stops can produce erratic readings, though this alone rarely sets a code.

PCM or ground connection issue5%

An intermittent ground or a PCM issue processing the signal can rarely cause erratic fuel level readings.
