The P0461 code means the fuel level sensor signal is technically within the valid voltage range but isn't performing as expected — in other words, the readings don't make logical sense to the PCM. For example, the sensor might report a nearly full tank right after you've driven 200 miles without refueling, or the reading might not change over an extended period when it should.
This code differs from P0462 (low) and P0463 (high) in that the signal isn't pinned to one extreme — it's just not tracking the actual fuel level accurately. The most common cause is a worn sending unit whose resistor strip has degraded after years of use, or a float arm that's stuck or damaged inside the tank.
The practical concern is the same as with any fuel level sensor code: if you can't trust your fuel gauge, you risk running out of gas. Until the repair is made, keep track of your mileage and refuel based on your odometer rather than the gauge. Replacement involves accessing the fuel tank, which typically means either dropping the tank or using an access panel if your vehicle has one.
Severity
Symptoms
- •Fuel gauge reads higher or lower than actual fuel level
- •Fuel gauge changes reading very slowly or not at all when driving
- •Distance-to-empty reading is unreliable
- •Low fuel light may activate at the wrong time
- •Check Engine light is on
Likely Causes
The variable resistor in the sending unit wears down over time, producing resistance values that don't correspond accurately to the actual fuel level, even though the circuit itself is intact.
The float arm on the sending unit can become bent, stuck, or obstructed by debris in the tank, preventing it from moving freely with the fuel level.
Fuel additives, moisture, or tank corrosion can contaminate the resistor strip on the sending unit, causing intermittent or inaccurate readings.
A partially corroded connector or damaged wire adds extra resistance to the circuit, causing the PCM to see readings that don't match the expected range.
A dented or deformed fuel tank can restrict the movement of the float, causing the sensor to report incorrect levels.
