The P0110 code indicates a general malfunction in the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor circuit. The IAT sensor measures the temperature of the air entering the engine and sends this data to the engine control module (ECM). The ECM uses air temperature information to fine-tune fuel injection and ignition timing — cold air is denser and requires more fuel, while warm air is less dense and requires less fuel. When the ECM detects that the IAT signal is missing or out of its expected electrical range, it sets this code.

The IAT sensor is a simple thermistor (a resistor that changes value with temperature) and is one of the less expensive sensors on the engine. On many vehicles, it's integrated into the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor assembly, while on others it's a standalone sensor in the intake duct or air filter housing. The most common failures are the sensor itself going bad, or corrosion in the electrical connector — especially in humid climates or vehicles exposed to a lot of moisture.

This code is generally low severity. The ECM will substitute a default temperature value and continue operating, so you won't experience dramatic driveability issues. You may notice slightly worse fuel economy and minor hesitation on cold starts. There's no rush to fix this, but it's a simple and inexpensive repair that most DIYers can handle in under 30 minutes. Do address it before your next emissions inspection, as it will cause a failure.

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light is on
  • Slight decrease in fuel economy
  • Engine may run slightly rich or lean
  • Possible minor hesitation on cold starts
  • Hard starting in very cold weather
  • Higher than normal emissions at inspection

Likely Causes

Faulty intake air temperature (IAT) sensor40%

The IAT sensor's internal thermistor can fail open or short, sending a signal outside the expected range to the ECM and triggering the code.

Corroded or damaged IAT sensor connector25%

Moisture, corrosion, or physical damage to the connector or pins disrupts the electrical connection between the IAT sensor and the ECM.

Wiring issue in IAT circuit20%

A broken, chafed, or shorted wire in the IAT sensor circuit prevents the ECM from receiving a valid temperature signal.

IAT sensor not properly installed10%

If the IAT sensor is not fully seated in the intake duct or air filter housing, it may not read air temperature correctly or may have a poor electrical connection.

ECM internal fault5%

In rare cases, the ECM's input circuit for the IAT sensor can malfunction, though this is uncommon and should only be considered after all other causes are ruled out.
