Intake Manifold Runner Control Stuck Closed (Bank 1)

The P2006 code indicates that the intake manifold runner control (IMRC) valve on bank 1 is stuck in the closed position. This is the opposite of P2004 — instead of being stuck open, the valves that control airflow through the intake manifold runners cannot open when commanded by the PCM.
The IMRC system is designed to keep the runner valves closed at low RPMs to increase air velocity and improve low-end torque, then open them at higher RPMs to allow maximum airflow for top-end power. When the valves are stuck closed, the engine effectively breathes through a more restrictive intake at all RPMs, resulting in noticeably reduced power during highway driving and hard acceleration.
The most common cause is carbon buildup that physically prevents the valves from moving, especially on direct-injection engines. This code is commonly seen on Ford vehicles with the IMRC system. While the vehicle is generally safe to drive, you'll want to address this within a couple of weeks to restore full engine performance and prevent potential damage to the IMRC components.
Severity
Symptoms
- •Check engine light illuminated
- •Loss of power at higher RPMs
- •Engine feels sluggish during hard acceleration
- •Reduced overall engine performance
- •Slightly increased fuel consumption
Likely Causes
Carbon deposits on the IMRC butterfly valves and their pivot points can prevent the valves from moving to the open position, effectively restricting airflow in the intake manifold at higher RPMs.
The solenoid or actuator motor that controls the runner valves can fail in a way that prevents the valves from opening, keeping them stuck in the closed or restricted position.
The position sensor that reports the runner valve position to the PCM may be providing incorrect readings, causing the PCM to believe the valves are stuck closed when they may actually be functioning.
In vacuum-operated systems, a leak in the vacuum supply or a broken mechanical linkage between the actuator and the butterfly valves can prevent the valves from opening when commanded.
