The P0761 code means the TCM has determined that shift solenoid C is either underperforming or stuck in the off (closed) position. When solenoid C is stuck off, it cannot open to direct hydraulic fluid to the clutch pack or band it controls, effectively preventing the transmission from completing a specific gear change. The affected gear depends on the vehicle make and transmission design.

This condition often triggers limp mode, locking the transmission in a single gear (commonly third) to protect internal components. While you can still drive the vehicle short distances at reduced speeds, prolonged driving in this state risks overheating the transmission and causing significant additional damage to clutch packs, bands, and seals.

The most cost-effective first step is to check and, if needed, replace the transmission fluid and filter. Contaminated fluid is a very common cause of stuck solenoids. If fresh fluid doesn't resolve the code after a test drive, the solenoid itself will need to be tested and likely replaced. This repair requires accessing the valve body inside the transmission pan, which is a moderately advanced job. For most vehicle owners, having a qualified transmission technician handle this repair is the recommended approach.

Symptoms

  • Transmission fails to shift into a specific gear
  • Hard or clunky shifts
  • Vehicle stuck in limp mode or failsafe gear
  • Check Engine Light illuminated
  • Noticeable loss of power during acceleration

Likely Causes

Shift solenoid C stuck in closed position35%

The solenoid plunger is physically stuck closed, preventing hydraulic fluid from flowing through the circuit needed for the gear change.

Contaminated or low transmission fluid25%

Dirty fluid with debris can jam the solenoid in the off position, or low fluid prevents adequate pressure from reaching the solenoid.

Wiring or connector issues20%

An open circuit or high resistance in the wiring to solenoid C can prevent the solenoid from energizing, keeping it stuck off.

Worn valve body15%

Scored or debris-filled passages in the valve body can restrict fluid flow downstream of the solenoid, mimicking a solenoid stuck-off condition.

TCM not commanding solenoid5%

In rare cases, the Transmission Control Module may not be sending the activation signal due to an internal fault.
