The P0725 code indicates a malfunction in the engine speed input circuit that provides RPM data to the transmission control module. The TCM needs to know the exact engine speed to calculate optimal shift points, control torque converter clutch engagement, and manage line pressure. When this signal is faulty or missing, the transmission can't shift at the right times.
The most noticeable symptoms are harsh shifts that occur at the wrong RPM, a tachometer that jumps around or drops to zero, and general hesitation or stalling. The transmission may slip because the TCM can't properly match engine speed to gear selection. In some cases, the transmission will enter limp mode. The vehicle is generally still drivable, but the poor shift quality accelerates wear on the transmission.
On most vehicles, the engine speed signal comes from the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor, so diagnosis often starts there. Check the CKP sensor wiring and connector for damage, especially near the exhaust where heat can degrade insulation. A failing CKP sensor may also cause P0335, so check for related codes. If the crankshaft sensor and wiring check out, the issue may be with the TCM's internal circuitry. A transmission fluid change is also worth performing, particularly if the fluid is contaminated, as some vehicles use internal sensors for this signal.
Severity
Symptoms
- •Transmission shifts harshly or at wrong RPM
- •Tachometer reads erratically or drops to zero
- •Vehicle hesitates or stalls at idle
- •Transmission slipping or refusing to shift
- •Reduced fuel economy
- •Check engine light illuminated
Likely Causes
The engine speed signal for the TCM typically comes from the crankshaft position sensor. A failing CKP sensor will produce erratic or missing engine RPM data that the TCM needs for shift calculations.
The wiring that carries the engine speed signal from the crankshaft sensor to the TCM can be damaged by heat from the exhaust, oil contamination, or vibration-induced chafing.
On some vehicles, the engine speed input is derived from an internal transmission sensor. Contaminated fluid with metallic debris can interfere with these sensors.
The transmission or powertrain control module may have an internal circuit failure that prevents it from correctly reading or processing the engine speed input signal.
