The P0705 code indicates that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is receiving an incorrect or missing signal from the transmission range sensor, also known as the neutral safety switch or PRNDL sensor. This sensor tells the computer which gear position the shifter is in — Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, or Low. When the signal is faulty, the vehicle may not start, the gear indicator may display the wrong position, or the transmission may shift erratically.

This is a moderately serious issue because it affects both starting reliability and shift quality. In some cases, the vehicle may enter limp mode, locking the transmission into a single gear for protection. You may also notice that backup lights behave incorrectly or that the engine can be started in gear positions other than Park or Neutral, which is a safety concern.

The most common fix is replacing the transmission range sensor itself, which on many vehicles is an externally-mounted part that can be accessed without removing the transmission. On some vehicles it's as simple as a $25 part from the auto parts store. Before replacing the sensor, inspect the wiring harness and connector for corrosion or damage, and verify that the sensor is properly adjusted. If you're comfortable working around the transmission area, this is a manageable DIY repair.

Symptoms

  • Vehicle won't start in Park or Neutral
  • Gear indicator on dashboard shows wrong position
  • Harsh or delayed shifting between gears
  • Reverse lights stay on or don't illuminate
  • Transmission stuck in one gear (limp mode)
  • Check engine light illuminated

Likely Causes

Faulty transmission range sensor (neutral safety switch)40%

The PRNDL sensor wears out over time, developing internal shorts or open circuits that prevent it from accurately reporting the gear selector position to the PCM.

Corroded or damaged wiring/connectors25%

The wiring harness and connectors near the transmission are exposed to heat, vibration, and road debris, leading to corrosion, chafing, or broken wires in the sensor circuit.

Misadjusted transmission range sensor20%

If the sensor is not properly aligned with the manual valve shaft on the transmission, it will report incorrect gear positions even though the sensor itself is functional.

Faulty PCM or TCM15%

In rare cases, the powertrain or transmission control module may have an internal fault that prevents it from correctly reading the range sensor signal.
