Cooling Fan 2 Control Circuit Malfunction

The P0481 code indicates a problem with the control circuit for your vehicle's secondary cooling fan (fan 2). Many vehicles have two cooling fans — one that runs for general engine cooling and a second that typically kicks in at higher temperatures or when the air conditioning is turned on. When the second fan's circuit malfunctions, the vehicle loses some of its cooling capacity.
The severity of this code depends on your driving conditions. If fan 1 is still working, you may not overheat under normal driving conditions. However, in hot weather, heavy traffic, or when towing, the loss of the secondary fan can push engine temperatures into the danger zone. You'll also likely notice reduced A/C performance since the secondary fan often supports the A/C condenser.
Diagnosis follows the same pattern as P0480: start with the fuse, then test the relay, then check the fan motor and wiring. On many vehicles, fan 1 and fan 2 use the same type of relay, so you can swap them to test. If the fan works with the other relay, you've found the problem. If not, apply 12 volts directly to the fan motor connector to test whether the motor itself is functional. Keep an eye on your temperature gauge until this is repaired, and avoid prolonged idling or heavy-load driving in warm weather.

Symptoms
- •Engine runs hotter than normal, especially in traffic
- •Second cooling fan does not activate
- •Air conditioning may not cool as effectively
- •Engine overheating under heavy load or in hot weather
- •Check Engine light is on
Likely Causes
The relay controlling the second cooling fan can fail, preventing the fan from receiving power when commanded by the PCM.
The secondary fan motor can wear out or burn out due to age, bearing failure, or excessive load.
Corroded, damaged, or disconnected wiring in the secondary fan circuit prevents proper fan operation.
A blown fuse in the secondary fan circuit will completely prevent the fan from operating.
The fan control module or PCM may not be properly commanding the secondary fan due to a software or hardware malfunction.
