The P0448 code means the ECM has detected a short circuit in the EVAP vent control valve wiring. Unlike P0447 (open circuit), a short circuit means current is flowing through an unintended path, either to ground or to another wire. This can cause the vent valve to stay permanently energized (closed), remain unresponsive, or behave erratically.

This is commonly seen on Nissan and Infiniti vehicles. The vent valve is located in an exposed position under the vehicle, making its wiring vulnerable to physical damage from road debris, corrosion from road salt, and moisture intrusion. Symptoms are similar to other vent valve codes—difficulty fueling, possible fuel odor, and a Check Engine Light.

A short circuit should be addressed somewhat promptly because it can draw excessive current and potentially blow fuses or damage the ECM's driver circuit over time. Diagnosis involves inspecting the wiring along its full length from the vent solenoid to the ECM, looking for damaged insulation, pinch points, or corrosion. Check the solenoid resistance and compare it to specifications. If the wiring is the issue, repair the damaged section and add protective loom. If the solenoid is internally shorted, replacement is inexpensive ($20–$80).

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light is on
  • Difficulty filling the gas tank
  • Possible fuel odor near the rear of vehicle
  • Hissing sound when opening gas cap
  • Failed emissions inspection

Likely Causes

Shorted wiring in vent valve circuit35%

The vent solenoid wiring under the vehicle has been damaged by road debris, heat, or corrosion, creating a short to ground or to another wire.

Internally shorted vent solenoid30%

The vent solenoid's coil has developed an internal short circuit, drawing excessive current or showing abnormally low resistance.

Water or contamination in vent valve connector20%

Moisture intrusion into the vent valve connector creates unintended electrical paths that the ECM interprets as a short circuit.

Pinched wiring harness10%

The vent valve wiring has been pinched or crushed against the vehicle frame or body, breaking through the insulation.

ECM driver circuit damaged by short5%

Prolonged short circuit conditions may have damaged the ECM's internal driver for the vent valve, requiring ECM repair or replacement.
